This paper presents a discussion about these meanings, emphasizing the aims of Rio de Janeiro village’s indians, taking into account their relations with other ethnic and social groups with whom they used to interact. The period focused extends specially from Pombal’s reforms to the 19th Century, when the disputes about ethnic classifications comes up more clearly in the sources: while political authorities and intellectuals state mixed condition and dispersion of indian’s villages, these ones argued for collective rights based on their indigenous identities. Nuevas proposiciones teóricas y conceptuales desde la Historia y la Antropología sobre los procesos de mestizaje en América han llevado a la idea de identidades plurales y a la percepción de que las categorías étnicas se construyen históricamente y adquieren diferentes significados según los tiempos, espacios y agentes sociales en contacto. Este trabajo presenta una reflexión sobre estos significados, centrándose especialmente en los intereses de los indígenas residentes en Río de Janeiro en sus relaciones con los demás grupos étnicos y sociales con los que interactuaron. Se da prioridad al período comprendido entre las reformas pombalinas y el siglo XIX, cuando las disputas en torno a estas clasificaciones se hicieron más visibles en la documentación: mientras las autoridades políticas e intelectuales afirmaban la condición de mezcla y dispersión de los indios de las aldeas, estos últimos reclamaban derechos basados ​​en la identidad indígena.
