description The colonization of the far South of America entailed numerous policies of interaction between the newcomers and local native groups. Although the Spanish crown had a bureaucratic apparatus and specific institutions -army, encomiendas, Indian villages, peace treaties, among others- to achieve Indigenous subjugation and the effective occupation of the territory, the implementation of these mechanisms of domination varied notably across the border areas. The crown's difficulties in exercising homogeneous and rigorous control over the vast territory it sought to control -even after the attempt prompted by the Bourbon reforms- allowed the officials in power to define their own interests and implement, more or less creatively, original modes of interaction with ethnic groups and their leaders. This particularity contributed to the borders of each jurisdiction manifesting specific historical characteristics; on this occasion, the focus will be on some of these colonial officials.

La colonización del extremo sur Americano conllevó numerosas políticas de interacción entre los recién llegados y los grupos nativos locales. Aunque la corona española contaba con un aparato burocrático e instituciones específicas -ejército, encomiendas, pueblos de indios, tratados de paz, entre otros- para lograr el sometimiento indígena y la ocupación efectiva del territorio, la implementación de esos dispositivos de dominación varió notablemente en los espacios de frontera. Las dificultades de la corona para ejercer un control homogéneo y riguroso en el extenso territorio que pretendía controlar -incluso después del intento impulsado por las reformas borbónicas- permitió a los funcionarios de turno definir sus propios intereses e implementar, más o menos creativamente, originales modalidades de interacción con los grupos étnicos y sus líderes. Esta particularidad contribuyó a que las fronteras de cada jurisdicción manifestaran características históricas específicas; en esta ocasión la mirada estará puesta sobre algunos de esos funcionarios coloniales. A colonização do extremo sul da América implicou em inúmeras políticas de interação entre os recém-chegados e os grupos nativos locais. Embora a coroa espanhola dispusesse de um aparato burocrático e de instituições específicas -exército, encomiendas, aldeias indígenas, tratados de paz, entre outras- para alcançar a subjugação indígena e a ocupação efetiva do território, a implementação desses mecanismos de dominação variou notavelmente entre as áreas de fronteira.
