The synchronic relationship is studied as a “problem of reception”, considering the cultural magazines Zig-Zag and Pacífico Magazine as research sources. Some considerations are also made about the newspaper El Mercurio of Santiago. These publications are privileged sources to understand the circumstances of the reception since they documented and recorded the dramatic event. First, the specific characteristics of readers’ participation regarding the conflict are analyzed. Then, the literature and iconographic components that made it possible to establish a direct link between Chilean society and a historical event of such magnitude are studied to evaluate the impact of the fall of the European reference in cultural terms.
