From the analysis of the results obtained through surveys, interviews and participant observations, tensions and disputes are noted in relation to the life projects of young people at the end of secondary school. In some cases, the students express a desire to leave their place of origin to continue their studies at a higher level or to look for a job in the city. Their families largely share such future prospects, while at the same time they fear being left “without aid” to sustain productive subsistence activities. As a result, it is highlighted that the compulsory nature of secondary school entails deep transformations, not without conflicts, in family dynamics due to the possible discontinuity of an intergenerational legacy: the projection of life in the countryside, since these young people are the first generation in access this level of education. En este trabajo el propósito consiste en interpretar los puntos de vista de estudiantes indígenas y de sus familias sobre la escuela secundaria en un contexto de ruralidad e interculturalidad en la provincia de Salta. A partir del análisis de los resultados obtenidos mediante encuestas, entrevistas y observaciones participantes se advierten tensiones y disputas en relación a los proyectos de vida de las/os jóvenes al finalizar la secundaria. En algunos casos las/os estudiantes manifiestan deseos de salir de su lugar de origen para continuar estudios de nivel superior o para buscar un trabajo en la ciudad, sus familias comparten en gran medida tales perspectivas de futuro, a la vez que temen quedarse “sin ayuda” para sostener las actividades productivas de subsistencia.
