El cristianismo ortodoxo griego cumplió, a través de la Iglesia, un papel fundamental en las conformaciones culturales y estatales de los distintos países eslavos. En el caso ruso, además, la deriva de la idea mesiánica de la “Tercera Roma” abonó tanto la consolidación de un Estado autocrático como el ímpetu imperialista, aun si este puede ser también leído como aspiración a una panhumanidad.
