It focuses on the work of Samuel Lafone Quevedo, Adán Quiroga and Juan Ambrosetti that developed in tune with the concerns of the era about origins that define national identity. This raises the question about how to place pre-Hispanic cultures in the context of argentine history. The three scholars of argentine northwest archaeology reconstructed the pre-Columbian past while assuming that the images of the pieces were texts to decipher. When positivist evolution triumphed, placing archaeology on the side of the natural sciences, this approach was definitively abandoned.  En el presente trabajo se exploran los supuestos y conceptos que sustentan, en los inicios de la arqueología del noroeste argentino (1880-1900), la interpretación de las imágenes arqueológicas. Nos centraremos en la obra de Samuel Lafone Quevedo, Adán Quiroga y Juan Ambrosetti, desarrollada en ese período en sintonía con la preocupación propia de la época respecto a qué orígenes definirían la identidad nacional. Surge entonces la pregunta acerca de qué lugar otorgar a las culturas prehispánicas en el contexto de la historia argentina. En los trabajos de los tres estudiosos de la arqueología del NOA se aborda la reconstrucción del pasado precolombino asumiendo que las imágenes de las piezas son textos a descifrar, abordaje que se abandona con el triunfo definitivo del evolucionismo positivista que ubicará a la arqueología del lado de las ciencias naturales.  On explore, dans ce travail, les présupposés et les concepts qui sont à la base de l’interprétation des images archéologiques au tout début de l’archéologie du Nord-Ouest argentin (1880-1900). On s’occupe en particulier de l’oeuvre de Samuel Lafone Quevedo, Adán Quiroga et Juan Ambrosetti, qui s’est développée pendant cette période et fait écho aux questions typiques de l’époque concernant les origines qui définiraient l’identité nationale. Se pose alors la question de savoir quelle place donner aux cultures préhispaniques dans le contexte de l’histoire argentine.
