The paradox is that the consequences of this "return" could not be anything else than the removal of freedom and capabilities that the demos had won and made the Athenian constitution a democracy. Our interest will be to discuss the tone of these arguments in relation to new perspectives that see a positive review to democracy.  El Areopagítico de Isócrates ha sido una fuente arduamente visitada por la historiografía. El contenido de la exposición expresa una serie de ideas que ponen en debate la organización política ateniense. Sin embargo su particularidad es que no se presenta como un cuestionamiento absoluto a la democracia sino a la forma que tendría en su tiempo y, establecida la superioridad de la democracia frente a cualquier otro régimen, su propuesta se funda en restaurar aquellos principios y valores tradicionales que la hacían preferible. El orador lejos de caer en una manifiesta posición antidemocrática presenta su perspectiva como una forma de mejorar la constitución existente sobre la base de volver a las antiguas prácticas. La paradoja se encuentra en que las consecuencias de este “retorno” no podrían ser otra cosa que el cercenamiento de las libertades y capacidades que el dêmos había obtenido y que hacía de la constitución ateniense propiamente una democracia.
