I28-R145-1073_oai2025-11-17 Damiani, Alberto Mario 2014-12-02 The aim of this paper is to explain the function of the imperator August in the political theory of Giambattista Vico about the common nature of nations. The paper begins with a brief presentation of the philosophical principles of this theory. After that, these principles are related with the theses about the empire of August, that Vico assert in two works: The Universal Right (1719-1722) and the Principles of a new science about the common nature of nations (1744). The conclusion is that for Vico’s cyclical conception of history, the imperator August has a contemporary relevance as paradigm of modern Europeans monarchies of eighteen century.
