The scope and limitations of that new type of social organization are analyzed here from a humanistic point of view. Se propone distinguir diferentes tipos históricos de sociedades de acuerdo a la forma en que la información se produce, fluye, se consume y el modo como aparece, influye y se reflexiona sobre ella. Se subraya el papel de cinco condiciones y características (dinámica y cambio de la vida social, globalización, mercado liberal, avances tecnológicos y elevado nivel socio-económico) en la aparición y funcionamiento de la sociedad de la información.
