Sumario:The productive transformations in the last decades have had a profound impact on rurality, altering the ways of life, consumption and values ​​in the rural world. This new scenario demands the creation of a new conceptual framework that shows the current rural world and that allows to understand the profound changes that are processed in it. The objective of this article is to review the different conceptions of the rural with the purpose of showing the relevance acquired by the «rural towns» in the views on contemporary rurality; secondly, illustrating, with a set of evidence for Uruguay, the current demographic dynamics of the rural towns. With this, the article seeks to be a contribution to the debate on the definition of the current rural world by seeking to focus attention on rural towns as articulators of contemporary rurality
