This new scenario demands the creation of a new conceptual framework that shows the current rural world and that allows to understand the profound changes that are processed in it. The objective of this article is to review the different conceptions of the rural with the purpose of showing the relevance acquired by the «rural towns» in the views on contemporary rurality; secondly, illustrating, with a set of evidence for Uruguay, the current demographic dynamics of the rural towns. With this, the article seeks to be a contribution to the debate on the definition of the current rural world by seeking to focus attention on rural towns as articulators of contemporary rurality Las transformaciones productivas de las últimas décadas han impactado de forma profunda en la ruralidad, alterando las formas de vida, de consumo y valores en el mundo rural. Este nuevo escenario demanda la conformación de un marco conceptual que dé cuenta del mundo rural actual y que permita comprender los profundos cambios que en él se procesan. En tal sentido, el objetivo de este artículo es revisar las distintas concepciones de lo rural con la finalidad de mostrar la relevancia que adquieren los «pueblos rurales» en las miradas sobre la ruralidad contemporánea; en segundo término ilustrar, con un conjunto de evidencia para Uruguay, la dinámica demográfica actual de los pueblos. Con esto, el artículo busca ser una contribución al debate sobre una definición del mundo rural actual buscando que la atención se enfoque en los pueblos rurales como articuladores de la ruralidad contemporánea.
