Sumario:This study examines the teaching of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Cheikh Anta Diop University (Dakar, Senegal). First, it describes the evolution of the curriculum from the university's founding in 1957 to the present. Second, it explores postgraduate students’ evaluations of the academic program and the language representations they construct. Drawing on a glottopolitical approach and using a questionnaire, the research investigates their motivations, perceptions, and evaluations. The responses reveal three main representations of Spanish: as a useful language for work, as a language of cultural prestige, and as a global language. While students value Spanish for its professional potential, they express a critical view of the curriculum, teaching methods, and study conditions. They point to a theoretical focus in instruction, the need for more oral practice, lack of resources and bibliography, and limited job opportunities. The study concludes that students’ representations of Spanish contrast with the current limitations they perceive, and it underscores the need to incorporate their perspectives in order to improve training and strengthen language instruction.
