The son of the «natural son» of a maid who worked for a wealthy family, a student at an elite Catholic school in La Plata, marked by a mandate to social climbing while devoted to anonymous folklore, Brizuela defined himself at the end of his life, with «pride», as a «negrito fino». This definition points to a different path from the one that Pierre Bourdieu and Didier Eribon postulated for the subjects of «dominated» social groups who succeed in the space of «legitimate culture». Brizuela’s challenge consisted precisely in constituting himself as a sophisticated writer and as a homosexual, and not only not distancing himself but intensifying his relationship to his imaginary place of origin. A partir de entrevistas y materiales inéditos de su archivo personal, este artículo investiga el modo en que el escritor argentino Leopoldo Brizuela (1963‒2019) elaboró su identidad social a lo largo de su vida y de su obra, reconfigurando sus historias familiares, conectando diversamente con espacios culturales heterogéneos y redefiniéndose en términos de clase, raza y género. Hijo del «hijo natural» de una empleada doméstica de una familia rica, alumno de una escuela católica de élite de La Plata, heredero de un mandato de ascenso social e investigador del folclore anónimo, Brizuela se definió al final de su vida, con «orgullo», como un «negrito fino». Esa definición señala un recorrido distinto al que Pierre Bourdieu y Didier Eribon postularon para los sujetos de grupos sociales «dominados» que se realizan en el espacio de la «cultura legítima». El desafío de Brizuela consistió precisamente en constituirse como escritor sofisticado y como homosexual y no solo no distanciarse sino intensificar su relación con su lugar imaginario de origen.
