This paper presents some of the findings from an extensive research project, focusing on the interpretive criteria and accompanying resources of guitar playing in chamamé in Argentina throughout the 20th and early 21st centuries. It analyzes chamamé groups in which the guitar has played a central role, beginning with the earliest commercial recordings, then focusing on groups whose guitarists expanded the instrument’s textural function, and finally concentrating on Mateo Villalba’s LP (Cabal, 1985)—considerated as a historical watershed moment in this regard— and on the innovations that arose thereafter. We employed a qualitative methodology based fundamentally on the musical analysis of sonic materials, taking the recorded performances as the main text. Other ther sources—press articles, archival documents, bibliographic references, and first–hand oral accounts—are also used and cited in each case.The article aims to examine the different roles assumed by the guitar and its contributions to the shaping of the musical texture of chamamé during the period considered, highlighting its expansion and consolidation as one of the genre’s emblematic instruments. This research seeks to address a lingering topic in musical studies in Argentina and contribute to the field of knowledge about Argentine music through one of its most popular and representative musical expressions, declared an intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2020. |

El trabajo expone algunos de los resultados de una investigación mayor, adentrándose en los criterios y recursos interpretativos de acompañamiento de las guitarras en el chamamé en Argentina, a lo largo del siglo XX y principios del siglo XXI. Se analizan distintas formaciones chamameceras que han tenido a la guitarra como protagonista, iniciando por las primeras grabaciones comerciales para focalizar, luego, en conjuntos cuyos guitarristas integrantes expandieron la función textural del instrumento y, finalmente, concentrarnos en el LP de Mateo Villalba (Cabal, 1985), considerado una bisagra en este aspecto, y en las innovaciones dadas a partir de allí. Para ello, nos servimos de una metodología cualitativa basada fundamentalmente en el análisis musical de los materiales sonoros, que toma al registro grabado como texto principal. Asimismo, se utilizan otras fuentes (hemerográficas, documentales, bibliográficas y orales de primera mano) que serán citadas en cada caso. El artículo propone dar cuenta de los diferentes roles asumidos por la guitarra y sus aportes a la conformación de la textura musical del chamamé durante el período antes mencionado, corroborando su expansión y consolidación como uno de los instrumentos identitarios del género. Se busca con esta investigación abordar un tema vacante en los estudios musicales de nuestro país y contribuir al campo de conocimiento de la música argentina a través de una de sus expresiones musicales más populares y representativas, declarada en el año 2020 patrimonio cultural intangible de la humanidad por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO).
