Lola Aniyar de Castro and Rosa del Olmo were fundamental figures in the development of critical Latin American criminology, profoundly transforming the understanding of crime and social control in the region. Both sharply criticized the penal system and the mechanisms of social control in Latin America, arguing that these reproduced inequalities and criminalized poverty. They also analyzed the role of the media in the social construction of crime, pointing out how distorted media representation legitimized punitive policies. They laid the foundations for a contextualized understanding of criminological phenomena in the region and promoting citizen security policies that are more comprehensive and respectful of human rights. This work recovers ideas from my final postgraduate work, and highlights not only Latin American critical thinking in criminological matters, but also the role of two women in this important process.
They laid the foundations for a contextualized understanding of criminological phenomena in the region and promoting citizen security policies that are more comprehensive and respectful of human rights. |
