In particular, it studies its origin, its purpose, and the modifications that accompanied the public agenda, as sociocultural circumstances varied. In this development, the legislative reforms and their expansion through jurisprudence stand out, in the face of new budgets susceptible to protection. Likewise, the unavoidable review of the assumptions is proposed, which guarantee social coverage against the economic needs generated by the death contingency, in balance with the sustainability of the system and without losing focus on the foundation of this institution. El presente trabajo analiza las pensiones en el derecho previsional argentino, prestaciones de la seguridad social que brindan cobertura frente a la contingencia social de desamparo por muerte. En particular, realiza un recorrido por su surgimiento, su finalidad originaria, y las modificaciones que fue acompañando la agenda pública,  conforme variaron las circunstancias socioculturales. En este devenir se destacan las reformas legislativas y su ampliación por vía jurisprudencial, ante nuevos presupuestos susceptibles de tutela. Asimismo,  se plantea la ineludible revisión de los supuestos, que garanticen la cobertura social frente a las necesidades económicas que genera la contingencia muerte, en equilibrio con la sustentabilidad del sistema y sin perder el foco del fundamento de esta institución.
