In recent years, however, a new conception of organology that is much more permeable to other extra–musical variables related to the contexts in which musical instruments are inscribed has gained strength. Thanks to the deepening in this direction, valuable information is now known about a diversity of characteristics that even allows us to rethink current and past instruments, in relation to their interpretation and function within their own culture. This article starts from a historical perspective on organology that we could call traditional and that has been gradually embracing the incorporation of the social practices that cross the discipline, proposing then a reading through the concepts of visibility, technique and culture, as possible complementary lenses to go towards the understanding of the complex dialectical relationship that exists between art, technology and society.
