Following various historiographical lines that suggest the relationship between Nicholas of Cusa and Descartes, the article shows that the notes that define this natural methodical operating of the human mind or ars coniecturalis, namely, its natural, facile, brief and ignorant character, are at the heart of Cartesian speculation on method. To this purpose, the article presents, first, the outline of the historiographical debate on Nicholas of Cusa's place in the history of philosophy, and underlines his place at the threshold of modern thought. Second, it discusses the natural methodical operation of the human mind through consideration of the ars coniecturalis in the books of the De coniecturis. Thirdly, it reviews the historiographical keys that have linked the Cusanus with Descartes. Finally, fourthly, he shows the presence of those notes (the natural, brief, facile and ignorant character) in the Cartesian conception of method.
