This work reflects on high-rise buildings constructed in Mendoza along the twentieth century by articulating two approaches: on the one hand, it addresses the legal aspect to analyze to what extent the physical-environmental characteristics of the city have defined and/or limited local regulations; and, on the other hand, it enquires into the architectural trends that have influenced the formal and material conformation of the existing high-rise buildings. Based on a chronological tour through building regulations, reference and iconic cases in the city are analyzed. Until the mid-20th century, there was a formal homogeneity that was interrupted by the spread of horizontal property. With the application of the latest regulations, however, it is possible to notice a favorable relationship between buildings and the rest of the factors of the urban system. Many buildings were probably influenced by European modernist trends. Nevertheless, it is possible to identify high-rise architecture designed in close connection to the cultural and environmental context of its urban surroundings. |

O presente artigo ensaio reflexiona sobre os edifícios em altura construídos n acidade de Mendoza durante o século XX articulando dois enfoques: por um lado, o aspecto jurídico, verificando em que medida as características físico-ambientais da cidade tem definido e/ou limitado as regulações locais. E, de outro, indagando acerca das tendências arquitetônicas influentes na conformação formal e material das construções em altura existentes. A partir de um percurso cronológico pelas normativas de edificação analisam-se os casos referenciais e icónicos na cidade. Até mediados do século XX constata-se uma homogeneidade formal que foi interrompida pela aplicação do regimento de propriedade horizontal. Porém, na implementação das últimas normativas é possível distinguir uma relação propícia entre os edifícios e os demais (fatores) do sistema urbano. É provável que muitas construções encontraram seus referenciais nas tendências modernistas europeias; mais também é factível identificar uma arquitetura em altura projetada a partir de uma estreita vinculação com o contexto cultural e ambiental do seu entorno urbano. El presente ensayo reflexiona sobre los edificios en altura construidos en Mendoza durante el siglo XX articulando dos enfoques: por un lado, el aspecto jurídico, en función de analizar en qué medida las características físico–ambientales de la ciudad han definido y/o limitado las regulaciones locales. Y, por otro lado, indagar acerca de las tendencias arquitectónicas influyentes en la conformación formal y material de las construcciones en altura existentes. A partir de un recorrido cronológico por las normativas de edificación, se analizan casos referenciales e icónicos en la ciudad. Hasta mediados del siglo XX se advierte una homogeneidad formal que se vio interrumpida a partir de la difusión de la propiedad horizontal. Sin embargo, en la aplicación de las últimas normativas es posible distinguir una relación propicia entre los edificios y el resto de los factores del sistema urbano. Probablemente, muchas de las construcciones encontraron su fuente de inspiración en las tendencias modernistas europeas. No obstante, es posible identificar una arquitectura en altura diseñada desde una estrecha vinculación con el contexto cultural y ambiental de su entorno urbano.
