Through period sources and the works of authors/s that also incorporate the Mapuche voices and letters, the phenomena of war, the livestock economy and violence are reviewed and discussed, which allows us to conclude that there was a break in the logic of the political pact for that of subordination, appropriating not only resources such as land or cattle, but also fracturing social bodies through genocide. These facts found a contemporary time that incubated the colonial situation and relationship that continues to this day. El artículo se centra en la guerra que los Estados de Chile y Argentina llevaron a cabo en contra del pueblo Mapuche en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. A través de fuentes de época y de obras de autoras/es que también incorporan las propias voces y letras mapuche, se van repasando y discutiendo los fenómenos de la guerra, la economía ganadera y la violencia, lo que permite concluir que hubo un rompimiento de la lógica del pacto político por el de una subordinación, apropiando no solo recursos como la tierra o el ganado, sino también fracturando los cuerpos sociales por medio el genocidio. Estos hechos fundan un tiempo contemporáneo que incuba la situación y relación colonial que llega hasta nuestros días.
