Sumario:The article analyzes the actions of the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) to develop soft skills in employees. An interview was carried out with the Personnel Training Coordination, document analysis and research with active public workers in the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Administração Universitária. The results highlight the need to adapt Competency Management to the reality of public higher education as well as the need to seek the development of soft skills. On the one hand, the legislation and the structure of the public service limits Competency Management and on the other hand, there is a need for managers to understand the importance of soft skills. Finally, it was identified that training actions related to soft skills are still not so prominent at UFSC and it is suggested to carry out research with an expansion of the sample of public employees to, finally, propose solutions that promote both Competency Management and development initiatives of soft skills.
