Association of Pantoea agglomerans and penetrating traumas. Presentation of two clinical cases in pediatrics

Sumario:Penetrating traumas in children are common but they do not always progress to entities such as septic arthritis or skin and soft tissue infections. Pantoea agglomerans is a gram-negative bacillus that belongs to Enterobacteriaceae family and it behaves as an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients. However, there are reports in the literature associating this microorganism with trauma infections with plant thorns and splinters in immunocompetent patients. The aim of this paper is to present two case reports in order to add evidence to the association of Pantoea agglomerans with skin and soft tissue infections and septic arthritis due to penetrating accidental traumas with plants in pediatrics. The strains were identified using the MALDI-TOF MS system. Antibiotic susceptibilities were evaluated using VITEK 2C system. We conclude that communication between the medical team and the laboratory is extremely important to guide the bacteriological search and prioritize the isolates.
