description The crisis produced by the COVID–19 pandemic in our Latin American and Caribbean region has exacerbated the situations of inequality that we have been suffering in recent decades. Thus, the struggle between different models of society and social, political and ideological polarization have increased, posing new challenges to the work and mission of universities and, in particular, to university extension programs and projects. Critical university extension or social action appears in this context as an innovative proposal that takes up a conception of a committed university that has its antecedents in the University Reform of Córdoba more than a century ago and also finds a source of inspiration in the thought of Paulo Freire and his pioneering experience in the Secretariat of Cultural Extension of the University of Recife in the sixties. The contributions of the Freirean educational philosophy, acquire renewed validity in face of the need to recreate and reinvent the university extension for the new times.

La crisis producida por la pandemia de COVID–19 en nuestra región latinoamericana y caribeña ha agudizado las situaciones de desigualdad que veníamos padeciendo en las últimas décadas. Así, la pugna entre distintos modelos de sociedad y la polarización social, política e ideológica, se han incrementado y colocado nuevos desafíos al quehacer y misión de las universidades y, en particular, a los programas y proyectos de extensión universitaria. La extensión o acción social crítica aparece en este contexto como una propuesta innovadora que retoma una concepción de universidad comprometida, que tiene sus antecedentes en la Reforma Universitaria de Córdoba hace más de un siglo y también una fuente de inspiración en el pensamiento de Paulo Freire y su experiencia pionera en la Secretaría de Extensión Cultural de la Universidad de Recife en los años sesenta. Los aportes de la filosofía educativa Freireana adquieren renovada vigencia ante la necesidad de recrear y reinventar la extensión universitaria en los nuevos tiempos. A crise produzida pela pandemia do COVID-19 em nossa região latino-americana e caribenha agravou as situações de desigualdade que temos sofrido nas últimas décadas. Assim, a luta entre os diferentes modelos de sociedade e a polarização social, política e ideológica aumentaram, colocando novos desafios ao trabalho e missão das universidades e, particularmente, aos programas e projetos de extensão universitária. A Extensão ou Ação Social crítica aparece neste contexto como uma proposta inovadora que retoma uma concepção de universidade comprometida com a transformação social e que tem seus antecedentes na Reforma Universitária de Córdoba há mais de um século e também encontra fonte de inspiração no pensamento de Paulo Freire e sua experiência pioneira na Secretaria de Extensão Cultural da Universidade do Recife na década de 60. As contribuições da filosofia educacional freireana adquirem renovada validade diante da necessidade de recriar e reinventar a extensão universitária nos novos tempos.
