However, contemporary versions of Egalitarian Liberalism, particularly that of John Rawls, have managed to assume the priority of needs satisfaction as a means leading to full citizenship. In the following pages, I will examine (1) how the Needs Principle, characteristic of the Socialist tradition, appears in Rawls’s theory and his conception of Marxian communism; (2) the function of the social minimum and the just value of political liberties in Rawlsian theory to secure the material means guaranteeing the development of free and equal citizens; and (3) the inclusion of a precedent principle to the principle of equal liberties in which the priority of needs satisfaction for the exercise of maximum equal liberty is made explicit. Thus, I will show how, in Rawls’s egalitarian liberalism, a shift takes place in the idea of needs from the adjacencies toward the core of the liberal conception. La tradición liberal ha sido, por lo general, remisa a incorporar el problema de las necesidades como elemento del núcleo de la doctrina. Sin embargo, las versiones contemporáneas del igualitarismo liberal, especialmente el de John Rawls, han logrado asumir la prioridad de la satisfacción de necesidades como vehículo para una ciudadanía plena. En estas páginas examinamos, (1) cómo el Principio de Necesidades, propio de la tradición socialista, aparece en la teoría de Rawls y en su concepción del comunismo marxiano; (2) la función del mínimo social y el valor justo de las libertades políticas en la teoría rawlsiana para asegurar los medios materiales que garanticen el desarrollo de una ciudadanía libre e igual; y (3) la inclusión de un principio precedente al principio de iguales libertades, en el cual se explicita la prioridad de la satisfacción de las necesidades para el disfrute de una máxima libertad igual. De esta manera, mostramos cómo se verifica, en el igualitarismo de Rawls, un desplazamiento de la idea de necesidades desde las adyacencias hacia el núcleo de la concepción liberal.
