| Sumario: | With the historical development, the concept of internationalization migrated from political science and international relations to university settings in the 1980s, later being extrapolated to international university cooperation. The objective of this paper is to carry out a theoretical approach to transnational education as a dimension of university internationalization. Both the stated objective and the methodology, together with other research techniques, allow us to state as main results that transnational education is a dynamic component within the internationalization of higher education and for them it is supported by forms such as: distance education, locally supported distance learning, twin programmes, articulated programmes, local branches of foreign institutions and franchise agreements, thus contributing to a more proactive internationalization of higher education. In conclusion, it is stated that the internationalization of higher education offers dissimilar opportunities, however its transnationalization presents some weaknesses. |
