El presente artículo repasa las principales instituciones, enfoques y presupuestos teóricos que predominan en la formación de pro-fesores de historia en México. Esta mirada general se concentra en dos aspectos: la formación docente en las escuelas normales, directamente reguladas por la Secretaría de Educación Pública y el trabajo realizado en las universidades, sea en las carreras de historia o sea en los posgrados de actualización docente. Se llega a la conclusión de que a pesar de que falta todavía un largo ca-mino por recorrer para mejorar la formación de profesores de historia para los diferentes niveles educativos, el panorama es alentador, pues es fácil encontrar múltiples instituciones preocu-padas por este tema.
