description The present work describes the review of a part of the investigative work that was developed in the Project “The virtual classroom and its actors in university education” (CURZA-UNCO). Studying 'classrooms as complex semiotic objects', the research team initially relied on conceptual categories derived from the notion of 'pedagogical dimensions' by Area and Adell (2006), and from 'multimodal discourse' (Kress and Van Leeuwen, 2010). After the initial phase of the work, the team identified the need to deepen the analysis and to review these conceptual categories, so that the relationship between the knowledge from the pedagogical field and the insights from the semiotic fields would be more meaningful and productive. In this new analisis, drawing on other conceptual categories by authors not considered initially but with a strong presence in the pedagogical field (Ibáñez, 2007; Onrubia, 2005; Gutiérrez and Prieto Castillo, 1996), made it possible to reconstruct the theoretical and methodological foundations of the project. The resulting change, not based on the detection of errors but on the purpose of enriching and deepening the analysis of the object of the research, resulted in the reorganization, adjustment and expansion of the analytical design of the project. In this design, the analysis of student learning and teacher mediation and support take more into account the data of interactivity and social interaction.
