In this article, we analyze the project and the institutional trajectory of the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF), located in a newly constituted territory. First, we review the different institutional models that have emerged for universities and relate them to the experience of UNTDF. Based on the analysis of institutional documents, we point out that its institutional project and other regulations can be related to the model of developmental universities advanced by Arocena, Göransson and Sutz as a model for higher education institutions that focus their third mission on contributing to territorial socioeconomic development. We examine some tensions that have emerged in the last ten years. In this regard, we find that research and contribution to development have been developed to a lesser extent than teaching. This has brought the institution closer to the ‘professionalist’ model that is the norm in the Argentine higher education system. En este artículo, nos proponemos analizar el proyecto y la trayectoria institucional de la Universidad Nacional de Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF), asentada en un territorio de reciente constitución. En primer lugar, analizamos los diferentes modelos institucionales que han surgido para las universidades y los relacionamos con la experiencia de la UNTDF. A partir del análisis de documentos institucionales, señalamos que el proyecto institucional y otras normativas pueden inscribirse en el modelo de universidades del desarrollo propuesto por Arocena, Göransson y Sutz como un modelo para las instituciones de educación superior que focalizan su tercera misión en la contribución al desarrollo socioeconómico territorial. Recogemos algunas tensiones que han emergido en los diez años desde su creación hasta el presente. Al respecto, encontramos que las misiones de investigación y contribución al desarrollo han sido desarrolladas en menor medida que la docencia, y han acercado la institución al modelo profesionalista que es la norma en el sistema universitario argentino.
