In this article we intend to make a contribution to the understanding of linguistic variation as a phenomenon of the language from the recovery of confrontation and contact points that, from the late 70's and mid-80's, established the linguists of the Columbia School on the problem of variation versus Labov´s sociolinguistic vision. Based on a literature review, we analyze the similarities and differences between the two approaches from three aspects: a) the definition of the variation and the linguistic planes of analysis for its application; b) the methodological approach that they favor (analysis procedure, kind of data, etc.) and c) the linguistic theory from which they are based. We conclude that, with respect to the first point, we identified that the difference in the way of defining what variation is, implied a dividing line between both approaches. Secondly, these considerations necessarily implied different ways of methodological approach for the analysis of variation and different positions regarding the objectives that are assigned to the analysis. Third, when we inquire about which linguistic theory functions as a framework for each approach, we identify that the answer lies in the different conceptions that both perspectives have about the linguistic postulates of formalism En este artículo pretendemos realizar un aporte a la comprensión de la variación lingüística como fenómeno de la lengua a partir de la recupera­ción de la confrontación y los puntos de contacto que, a partir de finales de los `70 y mediados de los `80, establecieron los lingüistas de la Escuela de Columbia en torno al problema de la variación frente a la visión Sociolingüística laboviana. A partir de una revisión bibliográfica, analizamos las similitudes y las diferencias entre ambos enfoques desde tres aspectos: a) la definición de la variación y los planos lingüísticos de análisis para su aplicación; b) el abordaje metodológico que propician (procedimiento de análisis, tipo de datos, etc.) y c) la teoría lingüística desde la que se parte. Respecto del primer punto, concluimos que la diferencia en cuanto a la forma de definir qué es la variación implicó una línea divisoria entre ambos enfoques. En segundo lugar, estas consideraciones implicaron, necesaria­mente formas distintas de abordaje metodológico para el análisis de la variación y posturas diferentes respecto de los objetivos que se le asignan al análisis. En tercer lugar, cuando indagamos acerca de qué teoría lingüís­tica funciona como encuadre para cada enfoque identificamos que la res­puesta reside en las concepciones diferentes que tienen ambas perspectivas en torno a los postulados lingüísticos del formalismo.
