description This paper presents the results of studies of, and reflections on, the university. First, it addresses the “old” dilemma of having to choose between mass or elite education, which has been evident in many of the education systems of Latin America across contemporary history. Second, it proposes an interpretive and conceptual perspective that we have called the good university. This proposal centres on the use of critical-historical interpretation, informed by hermeneutic philosophy. This perspective involves exploring the in-between, that is to say the situation between two, in this case between exclusion and training, from which the concept of ‘the good university’ emerges. We conclude by affirming an idea of university studies that is capable of “accommodating those who arrive”, as a hospitable and welcoming place.
