description Traditional approaches to the history of classical rhetoric include in the sophistic era the contributions of those Greek thinkers who used to work on the effects of emotion-arousing techniques. Scholars who study the role played by those techniques in oratory in classical Greek texts (5th c. B.C.) claim that the latter in particular are more stylized and prolific when they display ?the rhetoric of prejudice against the opponent? (diabole), about what to say and how to arouse hostility against the adversary than the treatises on Greek rhetoric. This paper deals with the resource known in Greek as diabole and that Aristotle presents in further detail in the third book of his Rhetoric. This paper takes as the starting point the debate in the first studies on ancient rhetoric edited from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1940s, which seem to have disregarded the most recent English works on the topic, as somehow detailed in the notes of the present article. As from the second section of the present paper, three central features of the Aristotelic treatment will be stated with the aim to illuminate on the value and the originality of this presentation. In the course of our analysis, we will focus on some passages from the Rhetoric to Alexander, whose English translation equals the Greek notion of diabole to that of prejudice.
