description The misidentification of type species in the original description of <i>Phymaturus palluma</i> Gravenhorst, 1838 led to the discovery that <i>Lacerta palluma</i> Molina, 1782 is really a senior synonym of <i>Callopistes maculatus</i> Gravenhorst, 1838. Thus, in agreement with the opinion of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, <i>Callopistes palluma</i> (Molina, 1782) was proposed as a valid taxon, being the type species of <i>Callopistes</i>. Also the validity of <i>Teius oculatus</i> (d’Orbigny et Bibron, 1837) instead of <i>Teius teyou</i> auctorum is here confirmed, being restricted the taxon <i>Teius teyou</i> (Daudin, 1802) to the formerly named <i>Teius cyanogaster</i> Muller, 1928. In the case of the genus <i>Phymaturus</i> Gravenhorst, 1838, in agreement with the art. 70b of the Code 1985 (Int. Comm. Zool. Nomencl.), the taxon <i>Phymaturus flagellifer</i> (Bell, 1843) new combination is proposed. <i>Phymaturus</i> Gravenhorst, 1838 is the senior generic name, though applied to a misidentified type species, which corresponds to the following synonymic taxon <i>Centrura flagellifer</i> Bell, 1843.
