| Sumario: | Macfie (1940, Proc. Roy. Ent. Soco London (B) 9: 73-79) described Bezzia ateles from Mundo Novo, Brazil, based on a single male specimen. In the diagnosis of this species, as well as in its description and illustrations, he pointed out that the «male hypopygium is without claspers» (= gonostyli). Haeselbarth (1958, Z. Angew. Zool. 52: 297-324) subsequently described Phaenobezzia, based on the above mentioned character being diagnostic for this genus, which is also characteristic of the more distantly related genus Nilobezzia, where Wirth (1974, Mus. Zool. Univ. Sao Paulo 14: 1-89) placed B. ateles. Spinelli & Wirth (1986, Florida Entomol. 69 (1): 231-236), in their revision of the Neotropical Phaenobezzia, overlooked Macfie's publication, and consequently did not consider B. ateles as a possible species of Phaenobezzia. |
