description The Map Room number four of the National Archive in Bogota, is made up of nearly 850 maps that cover the period between 1592 and 1997, although the strength of the collection is centered on the colonial period of the Kingdom of New Granada. At first glance, the researcher comes to know the most important themes found in this documentary collection; together with an approximation allowing for reflection of the importance of iconographic study in cartographic material. In historic studies, the map is used as an element that allows for graphic illustration of what is being affirmed; however, in the majority of cases the true significance is lost, which means that it is important to begin studies that allow for reflection of the importance of the map as a historic document.
