description The monitory democracy concept was proposed by the political theorist Keane in 2009 in order to explain trends that are becoming established in contemporary democracies. These include data filtering and scrutiny processes of centres and power relations (political and economic) that have altered the traditional dynamics of a democracy that is merely representative. Our aim here is to contextualise Keane’s work in relation to this new concept. The purpose of the article is to look at his monitory democracy proposal in depth, and to consider the analytical and transforming potential that accompanies it.
