description This paper describes, from an ethnographic perspective the local knowledge and believes concerning the weather in the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina in the Colombian Caribbean rim. It analyzes the social context of practices that improve adaptation to climate change. Additionally, the article shows how discourses of resistance to state intervention in local dynamics have social, historical and identity roots that should be considered by policymakers in order to enhance community-based adaptation.
