La revisión es iniciada en 1890 y finalizada en el año 1980, cuando la publicación del DSM-III, evacúa toda teoría etiológica sobre el padecimiento histérico, renunciando por tanto a la teoría psicoanalítica sobre la histeria, obteniendo finalmente una fragmentación de ella, a lo largo de dicho manual, en múltiples trastornos que se presentan en ausencia de lesión orgánica. Algunas consecuencias para la psiquiatría, el psicoanálisis y el paciente “histérico” son observadas. El artículo es el resultado de la investigación “Recorrido epistemológico de la teoría freudiana sobre la Histeria en la psiquiatría norteamericana”, realizado dentro de la «Maestría en Investigación Psicoanalítica», de la Universidad de Antioquia (Medellín, Colombia). OVERVIEW OF FREUD'S THEORY OF HYSTERIA IN AMERICAN PSYCHIATRY Abstract An epistemic overview of the papers published in the American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) is here presented. The AJP is an organ of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), an institution that groups most of the American psychiatrists and that is also the creator of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). In these papers, when considering hysteria, the appeal to Freudian concepts concerning the hysterical symptom can be observed. The review begins in 1890 and ends in 1980, when the publication of DSM-III evacuates every aetiological theory about the hysterical condition, refusing the psychoanalytic theory of hysteria, getting throughout such manual a fragmentation of the phenomenon in multiple disorders that occur in the absence of organic injury. Some implications for psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and the "hysterical" patient are observed. This article is the result of the research titled Epistemological Overview of Freud's Theory of Hysteria in American Psychiatry. PARCOURS DE LA THÉORIE FREUDIENNE SUR L’HYSTÉRIE DANS LA PSYCHIATRIE NORD-AMÉRICAINE Résumé Ce texte présente un parcours épistémique à travers les articles publiés dans la revue American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) —organe de la American Psychiatric Association (APA), une institution qui, en plus de réunir la majorité des psychiatres nord-américains crée des manuels DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)— dans lesquels, lorsque l’on aborde l’hystérie, l’on trouve des concepts freudiens au sujet du symptôme hystérique. La révision est initiée en 1890, et est achevée en 1980, quand la publication du DSM-III a évacué toute théorie étiologique sur l´état hystérique, renonçant ainsi à la théorie psychanalytique sur l´hystérie, pour arriver finalement à une fragmentation de celle-ci au sein de ce manuel, à travers de multiples troubles qui se produisent en l’absence de lésion organique. Quelques conséquences pour la psychiatrie, la psychanalyse et le patient «hystérique» y sont observées. Cet article est le résultat de la recherche Parcours épistémologique de la théorie freudienne sur l'hystérie dans la psychiatrie nord-américaine, réalisée dans le cadre du Master Recherche en Psychanalyse de l'Université d'Antioquia (Medellin, Colombie).
