Este trabajo sostiene que la riqueza es, de hecho, en relación con la felicidad. Más específicamente, se propone que ¿la pobreza, así como otras situaciones adversas ¿tiene un efecto de socavamiento sobre la felicidad, y que este efecto se atenúa por una orientación colectivista. Los análisis de varianza (ANOVA) utilizando datos sobre la felicidad, la riqueza y la cultura de 197 países, complementado por un meta-análisis de estudios empíricos que exploren la relación entre la riqueza y la percepción de la felicidad, apoyan la relación hipotética entre la adversidad y la felicidad, y la moderación efecto que el colectivismo tiene en tal relación.
