By means of the review and analysis of materials such institutional documents, educational legislation of the period and some texts produced by international cooperation organizations (such as Unesco and ECLAC), the research team identified the circulation of discourses related to the modernization of the Colombian educational system, economic and social development, and the American curricular perspective. Within the framework of these discourses, two concerns emerged. On the one hand, there was a greater interest in incorporating scientific and technical areas into secondary school curricula, which produced an articulation of different modalities that were functioning since the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century; particularly, technical subjects and vocational options stand out –that sought to ensure that high school graduates were quickly linked to the working market–. On the other hand, with the incorporation of these new subjects, it became necessary to create institutions and train teachers to teach them, a responsibility that the UPN took up as an advisor of the Ministry of Education and the main teacher training institution in the country. Este artículo derivado de investigación presenta un panorama de las condiciones que permitieron la configuración de una propuesta de formación de maestros en la Universidad Pedagógica Nacional (UPN) de Colombia, durante las décadas de 1970 y 1980. Con base en la revisión y análisis de materiales como documentos institucionales, normatividad educativa del periodo y algunos textos producidos por organismos de cooperación internacional (como la Unesco y la Cepal), el equipo de investigación identificó la circulación de discursos relacionados con la modernización del sistema educativo colombiano, el desarrollo económico y social, y la perspectiva curricular norteamericana. En el marco de estos discursos, emergieron dos preocupaciones. Por un lado, hubo un mayor interés por incorporar áreas científicas y técnicas a los planes de estudio de enseñanza secundaria, lo que produjo una articulación de diferentes modalidades que venían funcionando desde finales del siglo XIX e inicios del siglo XX; en particular, se destacan las materias técnicas y las opciones vocacionales –que procuraban que los egresados de secundaria se vincularan rápidamente al mercado laboral–. Por el otro lado, con la incorporación de esas nuevas áreas, se hizo necesaria la aparición de instituciones y profesores formados para enseñarlas, responsabilidad de la que se ocupó la UPN como institución asesora del Ministerio de Educación y principal formadora de maestros en el país.
