Likewise, this study is inserted in the productions of the Research Group in Higher Education and Academic Profession (GIESPA) developed within the framework of the international project APIKS (Academic Profession in the Knowledge-Based Society) in which participate various teams of researchers from more than 30 countries. In this context, in the first stage of our inquiry, we statistically characterize the main features that define the profession of academics in Argentina while comparing them with the indicators presented by the National University of Mar del Plata. The analyzed information was gathered from a comparative analysis of the 2017 Yearbook of the Secretariat of University Policies (SPU) and the various institutional statistical documents of our university. From a comparative methodological perspective and recovering the contributions that mixed approaches give to socio-educational research, we share the preliminary and exploratory advances of our postdoctoral study, contributing to the enrichment of the debates around the academic profession as an object of study in permanent expansion, both thematic and methodological. El artículo que presentamos se desprende de las primeras indagaciones de una investigación más amplia la cual busca comprender las tramas que presenta la formación de posgrado en la profesión académica argentina a nivel nacional y local. Asimismo, dicho estudio se inserta en las producciones del Grupo de Investigaciones en Educación Superior y Profesión Académica (GIESPA) desarrolladas en el marco del proyecto internacional APIKS (Academic Profession in the Knowledge-Based Society) del cual participan diversos equipos de investigadores de más de 30 países. En este contexto, en la primera etapa de nuestra indagación, caracterizamos estadísticamente los principales rasgos que definen a la profesión de los académicos en Argentina al tiempo que los comparamos con los indicadores presentados por la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata. La información analizada se relevó a partir de un análisis comparativo del Anuario 2017 de la Secretaría de Políticas Universitarias (SPU) y los diversos documentos estadísticos institucionales de nuestra propia universidad. Desde una perspectiva metodológica comparada y recuperando los aportes que los enfoques mixtos otorgan a las investigaciones socioeducativas, compartimos los avances preliminares y exploratorios abonando al enriquecimiento de los debates en torno a la profesión académica en tanto objeto de estudio en permanente expansión temática y metodológica.
