Sumario:In this article, we develop a general reflection about the concepts of "public" and "private" from the fields of history and history of education, focusing on the 19th century. We review an extensive amount of literature. The aim was to problematize the formulations supported by rigid and mechanical aporías between the public and private spheres and analyze how they inform and guide the studies, especially those related to Brazilian education. We reflect on the binaries between State and Society, seeking to demonstrate the fecundity and complexity of the affirmation processes of modern States, apparatuses, and monopolies, as well as the correlated social configurations. We seek to contribute to the reflection about the formulation and definition of the institute of freedom of education and what it aims to establish or to inhibit in Brazil since the nineteenth century.
