In this article, we develop a general reflection about the concepts of "public" and "private" from the fields of history and history of education, focusing on the 19th century. We review an extensive amount of literature. The aim was to problematize the formulations supported by rigid and mechanical aporías between the public and private spheres and analyze how they inform and guide the studies, especially those related to Brazilian education. We reflect on the binaries between State and Society, seeking to demonstrate the fecundity and complexity of the affirmation processes of modern States, apparatuses, and monopolies, as well as the correlated social configurations. We seek to contribute to the reflection about the formulation and definition of the institute of freedom of education and what it aims to establish or to inhibit in Brazil since the nineteenth century. |

En este artículo desarrollamos una reflexión respecto de las concepciones de público y privado tomando como referencia los campos de la historia y la historia de la educación, en investigaciones relacionadas con el siglo XIX. En este ejercicio, revisamos un significativo conjunto de literatura disponible, con el objetivo de problematizar las formulaciones apoyadas en aporías rígidas y mecánicas entre las esferas pública y privada y el modo en que informan y orientan diversos estudios, especialmente aquellos relativos a la instrucción en Brasil. Al analizar las formulaciones disponibles, reflexionamos sobre los binarismos entre Estado y Sociedad, buscando demostrar la fecundidad y complejidad de los procesos de afirmación de los Estados modernos, de los aparatos y monopolios, así como de las configuraciones sociales relacionadas. Con esto, procuramos contribuir a la profundización de la reflexión sobre la formulación y definición del principio de libertad de enseñanza y de aquello que se busca instaurar o inhibir en Brasil a partir del siglo XIX. Neste artigo, desenvolvemos uma reflexão a respeito das concepções de público e privado tomando como referência os campos da história e da história da educação, em pesquisas referentes ao século XIX. Neste exercício, revisitamos um conjunto expressivo da literatura disponível, objetivando problematizar as formulações apoiadas em aporias rígidas e mecânicas entre as esferas pública e privada e o modo como informam e orientam diversos estudos, de modo especial os relativos à instrução no Brasil. Ao analisar as formulações disponíveis, refletimos sobre binarismos entre Estado e Sociedade, buscando demonstrar a fertilidade e complexidade dos processos de afirmação dos Estados modernos, da aparelhagem e monopólios, bem como das configurações sociais correlatas. Com isto, procuramos contribuir para o aprofundamento da reflexão relativa à formulação e definição do instituto da liberdade do ensino e daquilo que procura instaurar ou inibir no Brasil a partir do século XIX.
