This article explores the positions held by Argentinean socialists regarding theatre show business in the decade of 1920. The main goal is to observe in what ways these spectacles challenged the socialist strategy to expand its social base throughout their own cultural practices. In a context in which socialists intended to grow in formal politics, encouraged by the extension of voting rights among the population, the new spectacles of a rising mass culture brought up a dilemma since they could improve the popularity of socialist events but, at the same time, impose a contradiction with the illuminist tone of socialist ideology.
