The studies on racial matters and the black movements in Brazil are deeply connected to the historical researches on slavery. Thus, the debate on post-abolition period in Brazil began with the identification of the elements of slavery that underpinned the marginalization of Black population over the Twentieth Century. We will discuss how Brazilian historians and scholars from different fields of the Social Sciences approached the formation of a racial hierarchy after the abolition and the rise of the black political organizations. O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar o debate historiográfico sobre a presença dos negros na República brasileira. Os estudos sobre a questão racial e os movimentos negros no Brasil estão ligados profundamente à produção historiográfica sobre a escravidão. Assim, o debate sobre o pós-abolição no Brasil se inicia com a identificação dos elementos da sociedade escravocrata que determinaram a marginalização da população negra ao longo do século XX. Aqui discutiremos o modo como foram tratados o processo de formação de uma hierarquia racial após a abolição e a ascensão dos movimentos negros no Brasil pelos historiadores e estudiosos das ciências sociais.
