Supported by a more recent bibliography and by new empirical sources, the article aims to propose a differentiated view about the regime, when compared to earlier more consolidated approaches. El presente trabajo examina el federalismo oligárquico brasileño en el periodo correspondiente a la Primera República (1889-1930), en el cual son tratados el proceso de construcción y el montaje del nuevo régimen, los principales pilares de su funcionamiento; así como un abordaje sobre los procesos decisivos, a través del análisis de los procesos electorales. Con base en una bibliografía más reciente y en el uso de fuentes empíricas hasta entonces no usadas, el artículo tiene por objetivo proponer una lectura diferenciada sobre el régimen en relación con abordajes más consolidados.
