However, the 80's were critical; renewal in the format of the publication -and to a much lesser extent in content- did not stop the decline in sales and the magazine ended up disappearing early in the next decade. Earlier, in 1987, Esquiú was acquired by Communion and Liberation (CL), a vast and complex Catholic movement from Italy. In this paper we analyze this situation to see how the new leaders of the journal interpellated its readers and what space looked to occupy in the Argentine Catholicism. We will argue that, from the perspective of CL, the Esquiú magazine constituted an interpellation device of Catholics according to a repositioning project of the Church in Argentina. Durante tres décadas el semanario Esquiú fue uno de los principales referentes de la prensa católica argentina de carácter masivo. Sin embargo, los años 80’ fueron críticos; la renovación en el formato de la publicación –y en mucho menor medida en sus contenidos- no detuvo el descenso de las ventas y la revista terminó desapareciendo a principios de la década siguiente. Antes, en 1987, Esquiú fue adquirida por Comunión y Liberación (CL), un vasto y complejo movimiento católico de origen italiano. En este artículo analizamos esa coyuntura para observar cómo interpelaron a sus lectores los nuevos responsables de la revista y qué espacio buscaron ocupar en el catolicismo argentino.
