We propose in this article that,from the intendancy regime, by including vagrancy as a policematter in its double meaning of economic promotion andsocial control, a policy of reduction to towns of vagrant andwandering population took place so as to inculcate Christianity,economic and productive life. To analyze this approach, we relyon the instructions given to sub-delegates and deputy judges ofthe Chilean sub-delegations. We propose the hypothesis thateradication of vagrancy was one of the reasons why Chilean sub delegations were of four causes, unlike the viceroyalty of the Ríode la Plata, where the cabildos maintained the highest authority inpolice matters.  La historiografía sobre el estudio de la vaganciaen el contexto de la Monarquía española se ha centrado,principalmente, en fuentes judiciales por lo que este fenómeno seasoció siempre al crimen y al delito. Proponemos en este artículoque, a partir del régimen de intendencias, al incluir la vagancia enla causa de policía en su doble acepción de fomento económicoy control social, se puso en marcha una política de reducción apueblos de la población vaga y errante con el fin de inculcarlesel cristianismo, la vida económica y productiva. Para analizareste enfoque, nos basamos en las instrucciones a los subdelegadosy jueces diputados de las subdelegaciones chilenas. Proponemoscomo hipótesis que la erradicación del vagabundaje fue una de lasrazones por las que las subdelegaciones chilenas fueron de cuatrocausas, a diferencia del virreinato del Río de la Plata, donde loscabildos mantuvieron la máxima autoridad en materia de policía.
