Sumario:The 12th article of the Ordinance of Intendants forNew Spain of 1786 established that alcaldes mayores should bereplaced by sub-delegates. This work aims to show that this changewas a slow process full of nuances, which initially privileged thecontinuation of the old officials. This situation has led to thesuggestion that actually there were no changes at all. It is arguedthat these agents, connoisseurs of their jurisdictions, were able toimplement, negotiate or adapt the transformations proposed bythe Ordinance with greater ease, laying the foundation for theirsuccessors.
