Due to the singularity of its originand unlike other similar frontier areas, the population wasorganized outside the castilian institutional model of territorialcommunities endowed with town halls or “ayuntamientos”.However, what sources reveal is that, within the frameworkof particular local conditions, there were instances of politicalparticipation of the settlers that took place in defense of groupinterests, through petitions to the authorities of the Bourbonmonarchy. Through the available documentation held at theNational General Archive of Argentina, these instances areanalyzed as a way for the population to express themselves interms of a republic, examining, at the same time, some aspects thataccount for it. La población de Carmen de Patagones se originó entorno de la plaza militar creada en 1779 y convertida en sede decomandancia militar y política en 1785. Dada la singularidad desu origen y a diferencia de otros espacios fronterizos similares,la población se desarrolló por fuera del modelo institucionalcastellano de comunidades territoriales dotadas de ayuntamiento.Empero, lo que trasuntan las fuentes es que, en el marcode condiciones locales particulares, existieron instancias departicipación política de los pobladores en defensa de intereses degrupo por vía de peticiones ante las autoridades reales. A través dela documentación disponible del Archivo General de la Nación,se analizan dichas instancias como un modo en que la poblaciónse expresó en términos de una “república”, examinando algunosaspectos que dan cuenta de la misma.
