I15-R239-article-14112021-05-17T14:48:41Z From Queens of the laundresses of Saint-Étienne to Labor Queens of Villeurbanne: Inversion of gender roles and moral conformism (from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century) De las Reinas de las lavanderas de Saint-Étienne a las Reinas del Trabajo de Villeurbanne: inversión de roles de género y conformismo moral (de fines del siglo XIX a principios del XX) Zancarini-Fournel, Michelle Barolo (Traducción), Gabriela Reinas del trabajo Roles de género Moral Carnaval Labor Queens Gender roles Morality Carnival is text aims to review the rituals of election andcelebration of different worker queens in France, which havebeen previously analyzed by ethnologists. rough the prismof gender studies, and from the perspective of political historyand microhistory, it makes a comparative analysis of the Queenof the Laundresses, the Muse of the People and the Queen ofLabor. In this way, it begins by investigating the festivities ofMi-Carême and the election of the Queen of the Laundressesat Saint-Etienne in the second half of the 19th century, andthen goes on to the coronation of the Muse of the People(1900-1906). Finally, it analyzes the appointment of the Queensof Labor in Villeurbanne in the 1930’s. e study points outthe need to distinguish between, on the one hand, the publicand official presentation of the working queens, events that takeplace in the center of the urban space with a massive turnout, are organized by political elites and that, despite their respectivedifferences, embody a moral and political conformity. On theother hand, there are the festivities of the washerwomen who, intheir neighborhoods and with an active role, on the day of Mi-Carême, take up carnival rituals such as collecting in the street, costumes, songs and eating practices, temporarily investing, thus, the gender regime.
